Overview

Finding ID Version Rule ID IA Controls Severity
V-254157 NUTX-OS-000530 SV-254157r991579_rule Medium
Description
Without generating audit records that are specific to the security and mission needs of the organization, it would be difficult to establish, correlate, and investigate the events relating to an incident or identify those responsible for one. Audit records can be generated from various components within the information system (e.g., module or policy filter).

Confirm Nutanix AOS generates audit records for privileged activities or other system-level access.

$ sudo grep -w chage /etc/audit/audit.rules
-a always,exit -F path=/usr/bin/chage -F perm=x -F auid>=1000 -F auid!=4294967295 -k privileged

$ sudo grep -w newgrp /etc/audit/audit.rules
-a always,exit -F path=/usr/bin/newgrp -F perm=x -F auid>=1000 -F auid!=4294967295 -k privileged

$ sudo grep -i /usr/bin/chsh /etc/audit/audit.rules
-a always,exit -F path=/usr/bin/chsh -F perm=x -F auid>=1000 -F auid!=4294967295 -k privileged

$ sudo grep -w "userhelper" /etc/audit/audit.rules
-a always,exit -F path=/usr/sbin/userhelper -F perm=x -F auid>=1000 -F auid!=4294967295 -k privileged-passwd

$ sudo grep -w "unix_chkpwd" /etc/audit/audit.rules
-a always,exit -F path=/usr/sbin/unix_chkpwd -F perm=x -F auid>=1000 -F auid!=4294967295 -k privileged

$ sudo grep -w faillock /etc/audit/audit.rules
-w /var/run/faillock/ -p wa -k logins

$ sudo grep -w lastlog /etc/audit/audit.rules
-w /var/log/lastlog -p wa -k logins

$ sudo grep -iw "/usr/sbin/pam_timestamp_check" /etc/audit/audit.rules
-a always,exit -F path=/usr/sbin/pam_timestamp_check -F perm=x -F auid>=1000 -F auid!=4294967295 -k privileged

If the privileged activities access listed do not return any output, this is a finding.
